2023 Tectonics of the Island

We return from the mountains,

bearing the traces of bamboo,
stepping once more into the crowd.

In a renewed form,

we reunite with an old acquaintance.

第三屆「島嶼構竹」新銳建築展

Tectonics of the Island originates from a series of bamboo architecture movements launched in 2021, aimed at showcasing the ecological, cultural, and industrial vitality of Taiwan. Building upon the structural systems and joinery explorations of the first two Bamboo New Field exhibitions, this third edition presents seven unique works, each reinterpreting and integrating bamboo into everyday life—rekindling trust in bamboo as a building material.

The bamboo movement is a contemporary continuum. Beyond advancing technical research and material development, Tectonics of the Island reflects on the choices of materials and construction in architecture today, and on how bamboo might reclaim its place in the modern architectural landscape. With its cultural depth, local industrial potential, and remarkable capacity for carbon sequestration, bamboo not only contributes meaningfully to the global pursuit of net zero, but also embodies a mutually beneficial relationship between people and the environment.

Centuries ago, bamboo was a cornerstone of building in Taiwan, before receding with the arrival of modern industry, leaving a gap in construction knowledge. Through this exhibition, we collaborate with emerging architects to research, innovate, and reimagine every stage of design and building practice—rediscovering bamboo, our long-familiar companion, in a new light.
