2024 Tectonics of the Island

Like cells stacking into life,

bamboo flourishes boldly between mountain and sea.

Yielding to the unpredictable winds of the east coast,

it embodies both sustainability and authenticity.

第四屆「島嶼構竹」新銳建築展

Exhibition sites are located at Jhihben National Forest Recreation Area, the lakeside area of Taitung Forest Park, and the Taromak Indigenous community. Six participating teams—Eric Chen, Mu-Yi Ko, Szu-Yin Chen, Lawrence Chien, Pe-Jen Wang, and Ahung Masikadd—each capable of both construction and volunteer engagement, embraced the challenge of creating bamboo architecture that resonates with the shifting landscapes of Taiwan’s east coast.

Guided by the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) and organized by the Taiwan Bamboo Society, the Tectonics of The Island exhibition enters its fourth edition in 2025, moving from the west coast to Taitung—hoping to see contemporary bamboo architecture flourish across the island. While the first two editions focused on structural breakthroughs and joinery techniques, and the third sought to integrate bamboo more closely into everyday life, this edition continues to cultivate bamboo architecture with an insular character. By responding to the pulse of our time and reflecting on the relationship between people and the environment, it moves a step further toward defining “authentic architecture.”
