Zhan House in Ishioka

Fields of Wind and Light

田野的風與光。石岡詹宅

Amid the orchards of Shigang, a 200m2 residence emerges from the careful transformation of an ancestral home. It is both a three-generation dwelling and a retreat for a brother returning from abroad, embodying the dual role of home as the heart of daily life and a vessel of memory and emotion.

The design begins with respect for nature, attuning to the paths of wind and light so that the architecture arises in harmony with its surroundings. The sloped roof and bird-steps speak not only in form but as a dialogue with the past, while the orchard and trees frame a central courtyard that extends the lineage of traditional farmhouses toward the present and future.

At the threshold between the natural and the constructed, the project explores the instinct of materials and the potential of architecture. Bamboo, timber, concrete, roof tiles, and the orchard environment interweave, revealing overlooked yet ever-present rhythms—a larger order that grounds the home.

Ultimately, the house becomes an inclusive domain: one that shelters the daily lives of elderly farmers while embracing the rhythms of a new generation; one that bridges memory and renewal, transforming the wind and light of the fields into the enduring landscape of home.
